A small London garden the clients wanted to look out upon, but not to spend time in. I took this as a challenge to create a garden they couldn’t resist going into! With the brief being to hide the eyesores of the homes opposite and the train as it passes, this was an opportunity to discover inspired, creative solutions to everyday problems.
A very low maintenance garden. One of the elements I designed was a wooden wall to absorb much of the sound of the passing trains. I left a rectangular opening in the wall, (inspired by the idea of wistfully gazing out of a train carriage window) so the green verge opposite would be highlighted while the train line would not. By using top hedging, I was able to obscure the houses opposite and unite the green verge visually.
I included a herb garden for scent, and mounds of Buxus sempervirens (box), closely planted to form a green sculpture, made of beautiful rounds the clients would hopefully want to go outside and touch. This kind of informal planting of a formal plant is something I like to do a great deal.

The clients loved the design and consequently asked me to work on their Small London Front Garden...
